ABOUT THE RACE

RACE INFORMATION

Challenge Almere-Amsterdam offers athletes one of the fastest and most iconic long-distance triathlon courses in the world. Set below sea level in the Netherlands, the race features calm, sheltered waters, flat and aerodynamic bike routes, and a spectator-lined run through Almere’s vibrant city centre. Renowned for its world-class organisation, passionate crowds, and history as a world-class championship venue, Challenge Almere-Amsterdam delivers the perfect stage for personal bests and unforgettable racing moments. Almere’s long history of triathlon includes hosting eleven European Championships (1985, 1991, 1999, 2006, 2014, 2017, 2019, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025) and two World Championships (2008 and 2021) with the race records held by Menno Koolhaas with a time of 7:36:36 and Marlene de Boer with a time of 08:22:30.

Race courses

swim course

The swim starts with two laps in the Weerwater for the Long Distance, one for the Middle Distance. The start is next to the Kunstlinie (Theater) on the Esplanade in Almere Stad. You will swim counterclockwise. The first transition – from swim to bike – takes place in the Lumierepark, where you will exit the water.

bike course

The bike course winds through scenic Dutch landscapes, featuring flat stretches, gentle turns, and open roads, allowing athletes to maintain speed and enjoy the ride. Two laps for the Long Distance, one lap for the Middle Distance.

run course

From the Lumierepark, you start your running course through the modern architecture of the city centre. The centre of attention is the green area around the Weerwater, the lake in the middle of Almere that once was a sea. The running course for the Long Distance consists of a 900-meter lap to kick off, then four 10.1 km laps to be completed before a final 900 meter stretch to finish your race on the Esplanade. The Middle Distance runs two laps of 10.1km.
