Two Decades of Challenge, Community and Inspiration: Celebrating 20 Years of Challenge Wanaka

This weekend, the iconic Gallagher Insurance Challenge Wānaka Triathlon Festival marks a remarkable milestone – 20 years of triathlon history, community spirit, and unforgettable moments in one of the most beautiful corners of the world.

Since its inaugural race in 2007, when just 85 athletes lined up on the shores of Lake Wanaka, this event has grown into New Zealand’s largest triathlon festival, attracting more than 3,000 participants from across the country and around the globe.

From Humble Beginnings to a Global Stage

What began two decades ago as a bold experiment quickly captured the imagination of triathletes everywhere. In its first year, this Challenge‑branded race was a leap of faith – the first time the Challenge Family team took the renowned series beyond its European roots. Athletes back then had no idea that the event would become a treasured tradition and a cornerstone of the sport in the Southern Hemisphere.

Over the years, the course has evolved – from a single‑lap bike route across rolling countryside to multi‑lap routes exploring more of the awe‑inspiring landscape. The addition of new race formats – team events, adaptive challenges, and a Middle Distance triathlon – has made the festival more inclusive and vibrant than ever.

A Celebration for Everyone

What truly sets Challenge Wanaka apart is its deep connection to community and inclusivity. It’s not just a race – it’s a festival that welcomes athletes of all ages and abilities. Alongside the signature 1.9 km swim, 90 km bike and 21.1 km run, events for preschoolers, juniors, secondary school athletes and adaptive competitors bring family and friends together in shared celebration.

From toddlers taking their first race steps to seasoned professionals chasing podium glory, Challenge Wanaka has earned a reputation as a truly welcoming and inspiring experience. No matter the race or distance; Challenge Wanaka delivers one of the most stunning sceneries, it not THE most stunning scenery, of the world.

Stories, Legends and Lifelong Impact

Over the years, tens of thousands of athletes have forged lasting memories here – some returning year after year. Doctors, teachers, weekend warriors and pros have all crossed the finish line, often reflecting on how the event changed them both physically and personally. Many early competitors now come back to cheer on their own children, a testament to the event’s role in shaping lives across generations.

There are also the ‘Legends’ – athletes who have been part of this event’s heartbeat since the beginning, whose stories of grit, friendship, celebration and sheer endurance embody the spirit of Challenge Wanaka.

Looking Ahead

For its 20th edition, Challenge Wanaka not only celebrates its rich history but also looks forward with purpose. The 2026 edition serves as the New Zealand Middle Distance Triathlon Championship, giving athletes an opportunity to race for national honours and qualify for the World Championships later this year. Some of the best pro athletes in the world are lining up, so make sure to check our race preview here.

With thousands lining up this week – from elite professionals to community racers – the event continues to honor its roots while embracing growth, diversity, and an ever‑wider global community of triathletes.

More Than a Race

At its heart, Challenge Wanaka is about more than distance or time – it’s about courage, connection, inspiration and possibility.
