Convincing Victory for Smith and Maiden Win for Damm Nielsen at Challenge Barcelona

Calm, sunny conditions greeted over 4,000 athletes along the Catalan coastline at Challenge Barcelona 2026. In the 70+ strong international pro race, Kyle Smith (NZL) and Anastacia Damm Nielsen (DEN) took convincing wins in 3:30:39 and 4:00:59, respectively

It was a one-lap swim at Mar Bella Beach in sheltered waters, with views of the Olympic Port and Forum Park. Sven Thalmann (SUI) exited the water first in 23:54, with Jannik Schaufler (GER), Smith and Maximilian Krüger (GER) right behind him.

After a quick transition, Smith took the lead in the opening kilometres of the bike and rode solo, at over 60 km/h on the fast flat course. At km 30, he led by over two minutes. The chase group of eight included Gaspard Tharreau (FRA), Thalmann, Thomas Teofili (FRA), Jose Ignacio Gálvez Ponce (ESP), Schaufler, Ul Densa (SLO), Pamphiel Pareyn (BEL) and Krüger. After riding solo the entire course, Smith reached T2 with a 1:50:42 bike split and a lead of over five minutes. Thor Bendix Madsen (DEN) started the run in second, 20 seconds ahead of Schaufler.

Smith held a six-minute lead at the halfway point of the three-lap run along the seafront promenade, in rising temperatures. Behind him, Schaufler moved into second, then Thalmann caught him, and Gálvez Ponce followed 30 seconds back. Thalmann took second in 3:35:01, and Schaufler completed the podium in 3:35:40.

“It was a good day and felt really good,” said Smith. “I am back on the rise after a pretty tough year. There were 4000 people over the weekend; it’s amazing to celebrate such a beautiful sport and community here in Barcelona.”

In the women’s race, Maria Vilas (ESP) led out of the water in under 27 minutes, with French women Maëla Moison and Eva Marsac about 20 seconds behind.

The top five stayed within a minute through the opening kilometres of the bike. Nielsen closed the gap on the second lap, took the lead and worked with Moison at the front. Marta Bernardi (ITA) joined the front group in the first half of the bike, which held a 2:20 lead over Krüger and four other chasers at the end of the bike. Nielsen dropped her chain with only 750m to go on the bike, but fixed it very quickly. Vilas was the first in the group to reach T2 with a 2:09:26 bike split, but fell at the dismount line, got up and started the run with Bernardi, Nielsen and Moison.

Nielsen led at the first turning point of the run, with Bernardi 10 seconds behind and Vilas a minute down. Nielsen and Bernardi battled for the win shoulder-to-shoulder through the final kilometres, with Nielsen crossing the line first in 4:00:59 to take her first professional win and Bernardi second in 4:01:04. Katharina Krüger (GER) overtook Vilas with 2 km to go and completed the podium in 4:07:28.

“It was such a close and hard battle,” shared Nielsen. “In the last 500m, I sprinted as hard as I could. I dropped my chain on the bike, but I managed to put it back quickly and get back into the race.”
