Challenge Almere-Amsterdam is set to make history in 2026 with the introduction of an all-new marathon, marking a double celebration: the 45th anniversary of Challenge Almere-Amsterdam and the 50th anniversary of the city of Almere.
The inaugural Challenge Almere-Amsterdam Marathon will take place on Saturday 12 September 2026, alongside the iconic Long Distance and Middle Distance triathlon races. Limited to 1,000 participants, the marathon promises an atmosphere and format unlike any other on the international running calendar.
Starting at 5:00 PM, runners will experience a rare evening marathon, with much of the race unfolding after sunset. Following an opening section of approximately two kilometres, athletes will complete four laps around the Weerwater, using the legendary Challenge Almere-Amsterdam triathlon run course.
This unique setup means marathon runners will share the course with triathletes still racing, placing them directly in the centre of one of Europe’s most celebrated endurance events.
“Marathon runners will be right in the middle of the action,” says Event Director Jefry Visser. “With multiple passages through our stadium at the Esplanade, surrounded by spectators, music and announcers, this is a marathon experience you simply don’t find anywhere else in the world.”
Marathon participants will benefit from the extensive race infrastructure already in place for the triathlon. Each lap of approximately ten kilometres features six fully stocked aid stations, offering water, Powerbar products, sports drink, cola, crackers and fruit.
After crossing the finish line, runners are welcomed into the dedicated athlete recovery area at the Schouwburg theatre, providing a warm, dry space with an athlete buffet offering hot and cold meals, as well as shower and changing facilities.
The marathon will start at the Forum, adjacent to the Esplanade and main event hub, right in the heart of Almere’s city centre. The race will begin using five closely spaced wave starts to ensure a smooth and safe start experience.
Registration for the Challenge Almere-Amsterdam Marathon is now open. Athletes who register before 1 March can take advantage of the lowest entry fee, with prices increasing in stages thereafter.
